Some facts about Ostrava

Ostrava is situated 15 km away from the nearest frontier crossing to Poland and 55 km from Slovakia. The surroundings of Ostrava are very attractive for both winter and summer holidays. You can enjoy a stay in a spa or sports activities (golf, skiing, swimming, cycling etc.). Ostrava had 315000 inhabitans in 2010 year, area is about 215 km2, maximum distances: from the north to the south 20,5 km, from the east to the west 20,1 km. There are 12 hotels, 5 theatres, 6 cinemas, 4 hospitals, 5 museums, 4 universities (VSB TU Ostrava, University of Ostrava,High Business School, High Justice School), 37 churchs, 5 chapels, 9 cultural centres, 3 ice rinks (there was 2004 IIHF World Championship in ice-hockey in CEZ Arena), ZOO and other facilities.

Ostrava was founded by the bishop of Olomouc Bruno in 1297 year. In 1362 King Charles IV. gave the right to hold an annual market. Ostrava was known as the ”steel heart” of the Republic with its coal-mines and steel industry (Vitkovice a.s....). Now Ostrava is a commercial, busines, industry and cultural centre.
